Last year, it became clear to me that I really wanted and needed to improve my pubic speaking skills in order to help my business grow.
I needed more practice but more importantly feedback. Not just from friends or people who wanted to be nice to me, but honest feedback, so that I would know what was working and what was not.
A friend mentioned she was a member of a speakers club, so I did a little research. I felt that at £40 for membership of the Swindon speakers club, I really had nothing to loose.
I had to re-organised my diary so I could be available on Thursday nights and was able to join Swindon Speakers Club in September 2018.
Much to gain
Well I don’t know about nothing to loose, there is so much to gain. The group is so friendly and welcoming that in just a few months, I feel like I am part of a family. All the members are helping me on my journey to becoming a better speaker, one I can be proud to be and hopefully, one day a professional one.
What I didn’t realise, when I joined, is that the group is part of a national association of speakers clubs. Nor that there are competitions and other areas of personal development and leadership that they help with, not just public speaking.
I am loving the enthusiasm and support in the group as well as the challenge, to speak unprepared, for three minutes on a topic I might know nothing about.
It was a very proud moment for me, when I received my member’s pin from the president, after passing my A1, the first prepared speech. You can find it on our youtube channel.
