swindon speakers

New dates added!

Open for the summer.

Swindon Speakers have always closed over the summer, to get a feel for a whole new year (think of it like the summer school holidays) but this year we are going against tradition!

Swindon Speakers are here for our members and after our last AGM and a very keen bunch of speakers, we have decided to keep our club open over the summer.

Now to make sure that we do not ‘over egg’ our members, and we are aware of holidays, children and other summer commitments such as Bar-Be-Ques so we have decided to roll out slowly at first. We are going to stay open over July with a view to run through August as well. So we want you to add;

13th July 2017

27th July 2017

– to your diaries. We will still run the club from 7.30pm until 10.00pm and we will continue to meet at The Blunsdon House Hotel, Swindon. New members are more than welcome to come and try out our new programme for free (and to stay on for our next season if you like us).

As the Summer holidays are a new thing to us, we also want to try something new at the club. For the 2 months over summer we are going to be calling our summer meetings “Speaker Extra.” We want to be doing less of the formal club business and instead concentrate on delivering more training and allowing Assessment speeches to be practised and completed. These extra dates will allow the club to set up for a great 2017-2018!

Dress code will be summer wear only, sandals and surf boards are optional.

It will be great to see you all there!

Speaker bureau

Swindon’s very own Speaker Bureau

Over the last year, Swindon speakers have been working hard on opening and operating our very own speaker bureau. The exciting news is that we have already taken the first tentative steps and we are declaring that the bureau is now open for business!
We are excited to offer this brand new service from within our own club. We believe in sharing our skills and we would like to offer the businesses and events around Swindon access to a very select group of highly entertaining speakers.

Speaker bureau
Having been approached by groups and organisations in the past, we became aware that we did not advertise this unique service and this is why the bureau was created. We are happy to put businesses, groups, event organisers and expo’s in contact with our members to discuss any speaker matter.
We want to take as much guess work out of peoples’ search’s as possible, so we have developed and are running separate pages for our speakers. This is so that people can find the perfect match for their event.
We have approached and found 3 members, who have willingly volunteered their profiles to be the first members to join the bureau. We already know of other members who wish to join the bureau at a later date.
These 3 individuals are some of the more experienced members and we as a club are confident that they will deliver a great talk or speech at any event.
Our club runs a training and assessment program for all members which carries a nationally recognised qualification. We only represent Swindon Speaker members to ensure we can vouch for their abilities. Our speaker bureau members will have completed their A5 assessment and obtained a qualification from our speaker body, The ASC (Association of Speaker Clubs).
If you would like to book a Swindon Speaker for an event or would like more information please use our contact page.

ASC National Conference – Hilton Hotel, Gatwick Airport

This year’s ASC National Conference was held in the Hilton Hotel at Gatwick Airport and provided a great opportunity to meet and mingle with speakers from other clubs who came from across the UK.

Our area (South West England) was represented by Wendy Wright, John Crawford and myself from Swindon SC and Amanda Rose from Dorset SC. We were especially proud of Wendy who was appointed Chief Judge in the Final of the National Speech Competition and gave an eloquent summary of this year’s top speeches before announcing the winners to a packed conference hall.

Our District (South West England & Southern Wales) had even more to celebrate when  Stephen Dance from Cardiff SC  came second in both the Speech Competition and the Topics Competition… a tremendous achievement.

The excitement continued when Wendy competed in the Final of the National Evaluation Competition, competing against no less than 3 members of the National Executive Committee, including the eventual winner. Wendy put on a great show and came away with a certificate and prize and much applause.

The weekend also included the AGM, several useful seminars and an opportunity to dress up in dinner jackets and elegant dresses for Saturday night’s Gala Dinner where we heard some amusing after-dinner speeches and were entertained by a stand-up comedian before stepping onto the dance floor for the disco.

Presentation of club badges and awards

On completion of their first ‘prepared’ speech at level A1 (The Icebreaker) each speaker receives an ASC (Association of Speakers Clubs) lapel badge. On 19th January 2017 three members (Steph, Ade & Dan) successfully achieved this and were presented with their badges by the club’s education director, JohnM.

At the end of each standard-format meeting the General Evaluator presents the Evaluator’s Cup to a member considered to have made a significant effort that evening. Photo shows evaluator JohnN presenting the cup to Sandra for her contribution on 19th January 2017.

This is just the beginning of the road to speaking improvement. On completion of levels A5 and A10 a speaker receives an achievement certificate from the ASC.

There are also four annual competitions where trophies are presented and the winner goes forward to the Area and District Competitions, namely the  Speech competition, Evaluation competition, Topics competition and Novels Competition. The eventual District winners go forward to compete in the National Competition Finals.
